The Real Food Cafe Wins The National Fish & Chip Awards Field to Frier Category
It's official, our chips are the best in the country.
On Tuesday 28th February our Founder and Director, Sarah Heward, travelled to London to attend the 2023 National Fish & Chip Awards Ceremony held by the Federation of Fish Friers. We were the only Scottish business among the three finalists in the Field to Frier category. On the day everyone in the Cafe was in suspense, waiting for the result to be announced and then it happened, we won!
The Field to Frier Award has been awarded to us for our potato knowledge, handling and chip preparation. This is a fantastic recognition for our hard-working team.
Sarah Heward said: "We transform 75 tonnes of potatoes a year into perfect chips, work done by our 'Chipologists', who take their job very seriously.
We are hugely proud of this achievement, whch validates our sustained effort over many years, in the face of numerous challenges and our commitment to offering really good, real food of the highest possible quality.
This award demonstrates that our team of dedicated staff and fabulous suppliers are maintaining the highest standards; there is always fierce competition for these awards from across the UK. I'd like to pay special tribute to our supplier, JM Breckenridge of Oban for their wonderful service in what has become an extremely challenging time for suppliers and to the team for their passion and dedication for giving our customers such memorable food experiences in our home in the heart of the Highlands. It is just wonderful to be bringing the award back to Scotland and celebrating our nation's love for fish and chips."
National Federation of Fish Friers said: "Congratulations to The Real Food Café, Tyndrum for winning the Field to Frier category, sponsored by Isle of Ely Produce in partnership with Babylon. They distinguished for their excellence in potato knowledge, care, and chip preparation."
Winning this award is well earned recognition for The Real Food Cafe's entire team and our veg supplier JM Breckenridge, based in Oban. Both have sustained a dedication to quality throughout numerous challenges, over many years.
The whole team were so proud to receive the award and they were happy to pose with the trophy.
This is our 6th National Fish & Chip Award which only amplifies our dedication to quality of our product. In 2020 we were crowned National Federation of Fish Fryers Quality Award Champion and in 2013 and 2014 we won the Best Independent Food Service Operator. Our chipologists also reached the final round of the National Young Fish Frier of the Year category twice.
We would also like to thank the sponsors because the awards would hardly happen without them. Our category was sponsored by Isle of Ely Produce and Agrico UK, the owners of the fabulous Babylon chipping tattie that we fried & taste tested not a very long time ago. (Hopefully, we'll be chipping Babylon soon and when we do, we'll be sure to let you know).
Finally, we want to acknowledge our competitors and wonderful category finalists, Fiddlers Elbow Fish & Chips and Pier Point Bar & Restaurant. They are great industry colleagues and fantastic quality fish & chips establishments.
We have got a blog post about the preparation process of our chips, do give it a read if you're interested, or better yet, come visit and try them for yourself.
