A fabulous result for us at The Scottish Woman’s Enterprise Awards in Glasgow when the café picked up the award for The Best Rural Based Business. We were treated to a glittering awards evening packed full of representatives and owners from a diverse and broad cross section of industries, all owned and run by woman and an inspiring keynote speech from Wendy Hallett.

The most Scottish shortbread in Scotland?

We are delighted to launch our new recipe Shortbread made with flour from Scotland The Bread who are reintroducing traditional wheat varieties in Fife and also milling them in Scotland. The variety we are currently using is Rouge d’Ecosse which hasn’t been grown in Scotland since the 19th century. We are sourcing this flour through GreenCity Wholefoods, a workers coop based in Glasgow. We are also using all Scottish butter from Graham’s Dairy in Bridge of Allen.

Our Learning and Development journey continues with more Modern Apprenticeship’s, SVQ Level 3

We are delighted to have enrolled two more of our ambitious team members into the SVQ Level 3 (SCQF Level 7) in Hospitality Leadership and Supervision Modern Apprenticeship program. This is a tried and tested route we use at the café with great effect to develop our junior and would be managers. We have found the Modern Apprenticeship program has helped our team members dramatically improve skills, knowledge and possibly most importantly, their confidence levels.

Hip Hip Hooray, it was an amazing National Fish & Chip Day...2019!

This year the 7th June was National Fish & Chip Day, a celebration of the nations favourite dish and all things fish & chips. 

We had lots going on at the café, much to delight of our customers, because we love to get involved as proud members of the Fish & Chip industry and the National Federation of Fish Fryers.

Proud to be known as the...‘’Toilet twinning Capital of Scottish W Highlands!”

Since our last update in early April we have raised a further £720 which has paid for another 12 toilets in Malawi bringing our total up from 51 to 63 loos in our quest to get to 100 by the end of the year.

At the café we are fortunate enough to have an excellent trade association, The National Federation of Fish Fryers backing us up and supporting us, which can be invaluable to a small independent business.

They publish a monthly magazine for members amongst lots of other activity which includes running training courses, work on sustainability, waste reduction and carrying out quality audits.

We’re making award-winning fish and chips accessible to everyone

Over the past few years we’ve been really focused on making alterations to our premises and services to ensure we’re providing the most inclusive and welcoming stop-off point for everyone. This year we’ve reach a new milestone with our first ever listing in Euan’s Guide, the travel guide for people with access requirements and we also submitted a blog post to the website, outlining our ambition to make award-winning fish and chips accessible to everyone.

The Real Food Café launches menu of Scotland’s most infamous dishes

We have launched a very special new Taste of Scotland menu celebrating Scotland’s most infamous food and drink items!

Officially launching on 25th January to celebrate Burns Night, the menu features haddock and chips with homemade tartare sauce and mushy peas, alongside bite-sized Macsween’s Haggis and Charles Macleod of Stornoway black pudding.

New year, new uniform and menu

The Real Food Café is kicking off 2019 with a brand new uniform and menu design. Our colourful new orange menus and staff polo shirts will brighten up even the gloomiest January day while our stag aprons give a nod to the incredible Scottish wildlife on our doorstep. We are also delighted to feature our craft Scottish beer supplier Innis & Gunn on the new uniforms, alongside National Federation of Fish Friers, Marine Stewardship Council, Coeliac UK, and VisitScotland Taste Our Best.
